Barton & Loguidice Wins Two ACEC Awards

The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York) has awarded Barton and Loguidice, P.C. (B&L) a Diamond Award for the Oneida-Herkimer Regional Landfill Facility project and a Platinum Award for the City of Saratoga Water Treatment Using Ultraviolet Radiation project. The awards were presented at the 2008 Engineering Excellence Awards Reception and Dinner Dance at the Waldorf Astoria on March 29, 2008. Diamond award winners go on to the National competition.

Hans G. Arnold, Executive Director of the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority (OHSWA), and Kevin Voorhees, a Managing Senior Associate for B&L, accepted the Diamond Award for the Oneida-Herkimer Regional Landfill Facility.

OHSWA Regional Landfill Facility.jpgOHSWA retained B&L to assist with siting, permitting, and designing a Regional Landfill Facility that will provide the two-county region with a local site for the environmentally sound and economical disposal of solid waste for the next 62 years. Design features include a double composite liner with built-in leachate collection system, a 25-acre staged sediment control system, stormwater detention basins, an energy-efficient maintenance building, a computerized remote data acquisition system, provisions for future installation of a landfill gas to energy facility, and 18.2 acres of constructed wetlands.

The City of Saratoga Springs retained B&L to assist them with the design and implementation of an Saratoga WTP.jpgUltraviolet Radiation disinfection process to disinfect up to 11 million gallons of water per day and meet projected demand through 2030. As part of a multi-barrier approach (utilizing sodium hypochlorite as an added protection), ultraviolet radiation disinfects physically, not chemically, and affords residents the best level of protection against potential water borne pathogens while eliminating the use of potentially hazardous chlorine gas. This project was implemented following recommendations from B&L in a report titled, “Water Treatment Facility Disinfection Study.”

Richard A. Straut, P.E., a Senior Vice President of B&L, accepted the Platinum Award for this project.

Through the Engineering Excellence Awards program, ACEC New York recognizes and celebrates engineering achievements that demonstrate the highest degree of skill and ingenuity among member firms.
